How to Drill a Bore Hole
Drilling a borehole is the first step in the installation of water wells, methane probes and water-level piezometers. You can drill a borehole and case it to keep the hole open, or the borehole may stay open without a casing if the surrounding soil or rock does not cave. Boreholes can be a variety of diameters and depths depending on the ultimate use. Your drilling company will choose a proper auger size and rig type for your project.
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
- Drill rig
- Driller
- Driller’s helper
- Shovel
- Hard Hat
- Earplugs
- Steel-toed shoes
- Work gloves
-
1
Mark your borehole location with spray paint or a yard flag, then call the local utility companies and ask them to inspect your location for the presence of underground lines. The utility companies will mark your property with flags or paint to alert you to the location of the buried lines. Keep your borehole location at least two to three feet away from any underground lines. If your original spot is too close to a line, move the borehole for safety.
-
2
Attach the drill bit and lead auger to the rig. Drill until the top of the auger is one to two feet from the land surface. Attach additional auger flights, and continue to drill until you reach the desired depth.
-
3
Remove soil cuttings from around the borehole as they expel from the augers, if you are using hollow-stem augers. Remove this cutting to ensure the augers are free to rotate. Pile the soil on your property for later off-site disposal, or spread the soil in a layer on your site.

How Water Well Drilling Works
Water wells have been drilled since ancient times. Wells are an excellent source of water for small groups of individuals, as wells tap into below-ground reservoirs and allow for water even during times of infrequent rain or drought.
- Historically, water wells had to be drilled by hand. A group of workers would have to dig with shovels and a bucket until they reached the water table (the level at which groundwater pressure and atmospheric pressure are the same).
Modern Drilled Wells
- Modern-day wells are drilled mechanically. This involves drill rigs transported by truck. These drills can reach as far as 1,000 feet into the ground.
Types of Drills
- Different types of ground require different types of drills for making water wells. Rotary drills chew through rock. Percussion drills smash rock, and large augur drill bits are used in soft ground.

How to Drill a Deep Water Well
Drilling deep water wells has been practiced for hundreds of years.
Ground water is a valuable resource, and even though we might not realize it, it’s all around us. Whether you require water for irrigation, home use or a business, wells provide a reliable system to ground water. Not many water wells dry up; however, some do have inconsistent recharge rates. So, it is important to study the area where you want to drill a deep water well. There are three types of well construction: dug, driven and drilled. Drilling is the most efficient way of constructing a deep water well.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
- Local hydrology information
- Deck engine (low horsepower)
- Truck
- Drilling rig
- Cable tools
- Water
- Bailer
- Welding equipment
- Torches
-
1
Determine the quantity of water you need before drilling a well. Know the recharge rate in the area you want to drill, or flow of water to your well. Know the size of the well you want to construct as well as the static level your well will have once you drill it.
-
2
Find out if you require a government permit to drill your well. Purchase and utilize a construction hat and boots during the drilling process.
-
3
Mount the engine on the truck’s bed. Attach the drilling rig to the cable, which will cut through the rocks by percussion cutting action.
-
4
Connect the engine to the drill rig. Combine water to the drilling action to flush out the well system of crushed particles using the bailer.
-
5
Weld the well for a water-tight seal. Decide on one of two case advancement options for your well: drive cap or drive block. Add the welding in sections of about 10 feet for more efficiency. Weld the casing so it remains firmly on bedrock.

Welding Contact Tips
Welding contact tips are important in MIG welding.
Welding contact tips are used in metal inert gas (MIG) welding, which entails welding copper cables together in electrical applications. These contact tips are integral to you doing your welding job properly and you should know how best to work with them.
Types of Contact Tips
- The contact tip is one of three parts in the welding MIG gun. It connects to the diffuser and transfers the current to the wire, guiding the current through the wire to the weld puddle. These tips are available in either fixed or adjustable tip recesses. You must regularly switch the fixed tips for different MIG welding applications and situations, though they are usually much more sturdy. The adjustable tips are much more efficient at being used for multiple purposes on an MIG job, but often break more easily as they have moving parts within them.
Effects of Contact Tips
- The effects of contact tips on the weld quality is based both on the contact tips themselves, as well as the wire stick out and the recess. The greater the recess, the longer the wire stick out, which creates more surface area for you to melt the wire and weld it to something else. Sometimes, based on the design or area of whatever you are welding together, you don’t have much wire stick out, which will be harder on the contact tip, creating more spatter, generating more heat and causing more wear and tear on the welding contact tip itself.
Contact Tips per Application
- You should use different contact tips for different applications, whether they are fixed or adjustable tip recesses. 1/8- or 1/4-inch contact tips are usually recommended for projects with spray transfer, pulse welding and other applications over 200 amps. Short circuit transfer and low-current pulse welding should usually use a flush contact tip. Extended contact tips are usually reserved for a small number of short circuit applications, such as deep and narrow V-groove joints in pipe welding.

Solar Temp Solar panels (made of durable and hard-wearing HDPE) are fitted to the roof. Water from the pool is channelled through the panels and is heated by the sun’s rays. The water is then returned to the pool by the existing pool pump. With such an efficient system temperatures between 22º C and 41º C are achieved. This system not only absorbs heat directly from the sun, but absorbs heat by conduction from your roof. In effect, the roof becomes part of the solar system.
Swim up to 10 Months of the Year
